I wrote this song four months before it was released; it was just a basic chord progression, bass, and lead that I really liked, but never went anywhere. (The chords and bass that you hear in the song were final in the demo; the lead was different but had the same melody.) On August 7, I saw a Tweet from Z Tapes saying that his next compilation would be for new artists, so I jumped in and quickly rewrote the demo with a different lead and added a harmony. ($5 patrons can listen to the demo.) Right after I rendered the demo and sent it to Z Tapes, I had a rather ambitious idea: to record every track single-take. (I left a couple mistakes I made during recording in to hone in on that single-take sound.) I recorded all but the main lead track later that day, since I just couldn't get that lead down. I tried on and off for the next five days until I finally got it. (Thanks for reading my spiel! Use the code "longtext" in checkout for 25% off.) At one point, I made a mistake and pitched it down, but I kept it in. That's the only edited part you'll hear in this song. There are some modern touches (for example: the track is EQ'ed and compressed) but it's minimal. The B-side, which ditches the reverb and delay, still sounds just as warm and intimate as the original version. I wanted that warm, timeless feeling that you get when you record a sparse arrangement on an analog four-track tape recorder and add atmosphere to fill the stereo field, and I really think that feeling came across on this record.
